Weekly Reader Programs

As a part of an ongoing effort to bring home safety education into classrooms, the Home Safety Council has partnered with leading education company Weekly Reader to create high-quality safety curriculums for elementary classrooms. The Home Safety Council’s online resources are updated regularly with new lesson plans and educational tools. Get Ready with Freddie
Topic: Disaster Preparedness
Grades: 3rd-4th Grade

Freddie Flashlight, Rover’s long-time sidekick, guides children through this program about family readiness and emergency preparedness. Students from grades 3-4 will follow Freddie through the steps to develop a communications plan and assemble “Ready-to-Go” and “Ready-to-Stay” preparedness kits for their homes.

Safety Rangers Spot Dangers
Topic: General Home Safety
Target Grades: K-3rd Grade

This educational program, lead by Rover, the Home Safety Hound, takes children through safety lessons and shows them how to spot common problems at home that could lead to dangers such as falls, poisonings, fires, burns, choking and drowning. The free safety curriculum includes teacher lesson plans, games and educational activities for children ages kindergarten through 3rd grade. It also includes a safety checklist for parents to go through with their children.

Fire Safety Rangers Know the Drill
Topic: Home Fire Safety
Target Grades: 2nd Grade

Safety Rangers Know the Drill is a fire safety curriculum for elementary students. Rover, the Home Safety Hound, guides students through a variety of fire safety materials to learn the importance of smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan.

Safety Rangers Say No to Dangers
Topic: General Home Safety
Target Grades: K-3rd Grade

The Safety Rangers Say No to Dangers program is led by Rover, the Home Safety Hound. It teaches children about the importance of practicing safety in their homes and how to prevent the leading causes of home injuries.

Code Red Rover, Grown Up Come Over!

Target Grades: K-3rd Grade

Safety Rangers Say No to Dangers and the Code Red Rover, Grownup Come Over video will help students learn to spot common home dangers and take action with parents and caregivers to correct them.

Safety Rangers Stay Away from Fire Dangers
Topic: Home Fire Safety
Target Grades: Preschool

Safety Rangers Stay Away from Fire Dangers is lead by the Home Safety Hound, Red Rover, and his Safety Ranger friends, Freddie Flashlight, Simon and Penelope. Rover and his friends take preschoolers through the home to teach them about home fire safety and burn prevention in a non-frightening way.

Fire Science Topic: Home Fire Safety
Target Grades: Middle School

This educational program helps students understand the concept of time during a fire emergency, explain the science behind how fire works, and explore life-saving technologies, such as fire sprinklers and interconnected smoke alarms.
