Great Safety Adventure® Makes An Impact

Study Shows Educational Home Safety Tour Changing Behavior At Home

According to a recent independent study conducted by Pacific Research Associates, children who have participated in the Great Safety Adventure (GSA) have learned more important home safety messages than children who do not participate in the program. In all, 104 classrooms in 18 schools that served students from different socio-economic levels and regions of the United States participated in the evaluation.

GSA Makes An Impact Per Independent Study

Finding 1:

About a third of the parents (32%) reported the family made a safety improvement in the home due to their children's participation in the Great Safety Adventure.

Finding 2:

Children who attended the GSA learned more home safety messages than children who did not attend the exhibit.

Finding 3:

Parents report that their children talked between "a little more" and "about the same" about safety issues after their participation in the Great Safety Adventure.

Additional findings: The results show...

  • Twenty-seven percent of parents reported making a change in fire and burn safety.
  • The primary change in fire and burn safety was that the family developed, revised, checked, or reviewed features of the fire escape plan for the house (31%).
  • The primary change in poisoning prevention was that the family moved cleaners, pesticides and other hazardous materials to a more secure location out of the reach of children (47%).

What If...?

IF everyone who attended GSA (130,968) in 2002 fit the criteria of this study, then the impact would be:

  • 41,909 making a change in the home in at least one of the four safety areas
  • 35,361 making a change in fire and burn safety
  • 61,554 moving cleaners, pesticides and other hazardous materials to a more secure location out of the reach of children
