The Great Safety Adventure® - Overview Unintentional home injuries cause nearly 20,000 deaths and 21 million medical visits on average each year. The Home Safety Council saw this tremendous need to educate children and families about the many potential dangers in the home and as a result created The Great Safety Adventure® (GSA) in 1999. The GSA is a national mobile tour visiting elementary schools, community events and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouses, teaching children and their families about home safety with a fun and interactive approach. Since 1999 The Great Safety Adventure has reached nearly 1,000,000 children and families creating safer homes and safer families across the country. Experience the Adventure! The Great Safety Adventure is a traveling exhibit that teaches basic home safety skills to help children, families and communities learn about five important home safety risk areas: (1) falls; (2) poisoning; (3) fires and burns; (4) choking and suffocation and (5) drowning. A semi-tractor trailer truck unfolds into a nearly 1,000 square foot animated home that children can explore for hands on safety tips. The living room prepares children for their adventure through an animated orientation video. Each child is armed with a flashlight and an interactive video introduces Rover, the Home Safety Hound. When Rover spots a danger in the home, his nose turns red and spins like a siren. He teaches children to shout "Code Red Rover, Grown Up Come Over!" alerting adults to correct the safety danger and keeping children out of harms way. The kitchen creates a real life "What's wrong with this picture" exercise where children practice identifying safety dangers. Trained 'Safety Ranger' tour guides magically correct the problems (with the help of some special effects), leaving the room safer for Rover. The backyard, bathroom and bedroom are other stops on The Great Safety Adventure where children learn to identify more dangers to make Rover's home safer. In Rover's bedroom, the children are lead through a discussion of fire safety, how to escape in the event of a fire in the home and the importance of a fire escape plan for their family. In the finale, the Safety Ranger creates a mock fire drill with simulated smoke and the children safely crawl out of the room to their meeting place.
