HSC Convenes Inaugural Data Collection Summit

HSC convened its first ever Data Collection Summit in Washington D.C. on May 17 and 18. The Summit brought together over 20 experts in the areas of injury prevention research, as well as users and providers of injury data from diverse hazard disciplines, such as home safety, traffic, consumer products, and violence for two days of discussion and brainstorming.

The meeting focused on ways to improve the existing data collection systems and process and on how HSC could play a role in moving the recommendations forward. With attendees representing several federal, state, and local agencies associations, the medical and health care fields, and non-profit organizations, the Summit was a rare opportunity for members of these organizations to come together and discuss the challenges with completeness, quality and consistency of day that they rely on to conduct their analyses, prepare reports, inform the public, and develop interventions.

Dr. Sudip Parikh, Science Advisor for the Senate Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, provided valuable insight concerning the current federal funding landscape.

“More than 20 representatives from the data collection and injury prevention community attended the Data Collection Summit on May 17th and 18th in Washington D.C.”

“On the first day of the Data Collection Summit, participants worked in small groups to provide recommendations and innovative ideas to improve the existing systems.”

“Dr. Sue Binder facilitated the two-day Summit.”
