Morton Salt’s Corporate Home Safety Month Program

Use this as an example of what your company can do

Plan:

During June, Morton Salt employees recognized Home Safety Month company-wide. Morton’s goal was to raise home safety awareness among employees and their families to help them make wise decisions regarding personal safety, even at home. All families were strongly encouraged to participate in the program.

Execution:

Morton Salt distributed the Home Safety Council’s "Code Red Rover, Grownup Come Over!" DVD to the company’s different work sites. Each site set up a “loaner program” where employees could borrow the DVD and view it at home with their family. The employees were instructed to then return the DVD (along with a signed confirmation) to the site for the next employee to borrow. While the DVD is geared towards children, adults found it to be a valuable source of safety information as well. Employees who viewed the video and signed a “Statement of Confirmation” were eligible to enter a drawing. Sample prizes included: iPods, gift certificates and home safety materials.

Results:

More than 350 Morton Salt employees participated in the awareness program.

Some of the comments provided by the employees and their children include:

  • “I really enjoyed the safety video. A lot of the things covered are very basic and I knew already but many times we ignore these hazards. Doing some of these things like replacing the batteries on the fire alarms or moving hot objects away from kids can save lives or prevent serious accidents from happening. “
  • “After watching the video, we replaced the batteries on all our fire alarms. I made my dad promise that he will check them every month like Rover says.”
  • “We scheduled a day to develop an escape plan in case of a fire. We don’t have one now. I’m glad my family and I watched this video, and we plan to continue to stay safe by following their suggestions.”
