HOME SAFETY COUNCIL® OFFERS VALUABLE RESOURCES FOR FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY EDUCATORS Council Debuts Four Educational Programs in Honor of Fire Safety Month The nonprofit Home Safety Council (HSC) is making a wide range of high-quality teaching resources available to help fire and life safety educators reach out to their communities during Fire Safety Month and year-round. Among the featured resources are new fire safety educational tools for preschool, elementary and middle school students, and a new fire safety program for older adults, all created with HSC partner Weekly Reader Corporation Custom Publishing. “The Home Safety Council is working hard to support the local efforts of community fire and life safety educators, who are the key to providing fire safety information to families across the country,” said Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council. “Through our valued partnerships we are able to produce varied teaching tools and other resources at no cost to educators, or at very low cost, helping them reach all of their audiences, especially those at higher risk of injury.” As part of this ongoing effort to bring fire safety education home at the local level, the Home Safety Council is helping fire and life safety advocates reach deep into their communities and educate families on the simple actions they can take to prevent fires and be prepared in case a fire strikes. HSC Debuts New Fire Safety Educational Programs The Home Safety Council has joined with Weekly Reader to develop four new fire safety programs that cross the life-span. The All-Ways Fire Safe at Home programs are now available online to help provide fire safety messages for those in every stage of life from preschool to older adult. Through HSC’s partnership with Weekly Reader, the programs are being utilized in preschool, elementary and middle schools and distributed through 11,000 senior centers. The new educational programs include:
“The Home Safety Council is grateful to have had the support of the National Fire Sprinkler Association and Tyco in the development of these new programs,” Appy says. “The tremendous value of home fire sprinkler systems is featured in the middle school and older adult programs, to help more consumers become aware of this life-saving fire protection technology.” Home Fire Safety: Be Safe and Sound In addition to these new programs, the Home Safety Council is re-releasing its popular Home Fire Safety: Be Safe and Sound brochure in honor of Fire Safety Month. This versatile tool teaches the basics of home fire safety through easy-to-read text and photo illustrations and is presented in English and Spanish. A full-color download of the brochure is available at no charge on the Home Safety Council’s Web site. Members of the HSC Expert Network may order 50 printed copies for the cost of shipping and handling ($7.50). Membership in the Expert Network is free. All-Ways Fire Safe at Home Conference The Home Safety Council is also hosting the first national gathering to explore and share best practices in home fire and burn safety education. U.S. fire and life safety educators will gather in Washington DC in January 2007 to learn innovative and proven approaches to public fire and life safety education and to receive teaching ideas and materials that can be replicated in communities across the country.
