August 2007: Disaster Preparedness and the Home Safety Council’s Get Ready with Freddie! Program Summary: In the two years since Hurricane Katrina; do you think families in the U.S. are more or less prepared for disasters? What can you do to help those in your community recognize the importance of developing a disaster preparedness plan? In support of National Preparedness Month in September, this presentation covered the latest disaster preparedness research, tips on engaging the disengaged and the most effective methods for teaching those in your community to be more prepared. The presentation highlighted HSC’s innovative disaster preparedness program Get Ready with Freddie! and offers ideas to help you implement the program in your own community. This fall, the Get Ready with Freddie! program materials were distributed free to every U.S. elementary school with a third and/or fourth grade classroom across the country, reaching an estimated 13 million teachers, students and their families. HSC also sent each U.S. fire service member of the Expert Network a set of three Get Ready with Freddie! programs – one to keep, and two to share with additional classrooms in your community. It also previewed the national "Kids Prepare America" contest that launched this fall to showcase the ways students are using Get Ready with Freddie! lessons to drive family preparedness efforts at home and help increase the safety of their own communities.
