Home Safety Messages Reach Millions Through
National Morning News...

HSC President Meri-K Appy delivered life-saving messages to families across the country through top-rated national morning news programs. In October, a live home fire sprinkler demonstration on NBC’s TODAY Show showed Americans the effectiveness of home fire sprinklers in saving homes and lives. Additionally, in December a CBS Early Show segment drew attention to the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning at home, educating viewers how to protect their families.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Webinar Draws Strong Participation...
HSC teamed-up with First Alert for the widely attended Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Webinar on November 19. Presented by Meri-K Appy and Deborah Hanson, HSC President and Director of External Affairs for BRK Brands/First Alert respectively, this informative and comprehensive presentation attracted more than 150 participants.

HSC Pilots Start Safe Program at National Head Start Association (NHSA) Conference...
In December, HSC tested materials for its Start Safe: a Fire and Burn Safety Program for Preschool Children and Their Families at the National Head Start Association 25th Annual Parent Conference in Atlanta. The program is supported by the Home Safety Council along with AFG Fire Prevention and Safety Grant funding through the FEMA/Grants Program Directorate. It aims to create materials that deliver basic fire and burn safety information to at risk, preschool-age children and their families with lower levels of income and education.

New Safe Haven Survey Results Available on Homesafetycouncil.org...
New HSC research included in the latest Safe Haven report, “Room-by-Room Home Safety,” reveals that nearly half of Americans have not taken a single action to prevent injuries in any area of their home-even the rooms they consider the most dangerous. The report, now available on Homesafetycouncil.org, makes creating a safe home easy by recommending actions and steps one room at a time.

HSC Provides Technical Assistance on Program Evaluation for the Fire Service...
In November, Dr. Angela Mickalide, HSC Director of Education and Outreach, lent her fire safety education expertise for a presentation to fire and life safety educators at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. As part of the “Demonstrating Your Prevention Program’s Worth” pilot course, Dr. Mickalide’s lecture addressed the importance of focusing one’s evaluation design to meet the needs of both the community and the program goals and objective.

PUBLIC POLICY

HSC Urges Congress to Keep Funding in the Fiscal Year 2009 Appropriations Bills...
HSC, along with the Falls Free Coalition Advocacy Work Group, ended 2008 with a final push urging the Senate to recede to the higher House funding level for FY 2009 and encouraging the House to keep its $2.2 million increase in funding for falls programming. A letter was sent and received by all members of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor-HHS-Education and our Congressional allies.

HSC Congratulates Re-Elected Friends on Capitol Hill...
HSC extended their congratulations to Capitol Hill friends re-elected to the United States Senate and House of Representatives. The letter thanked officials for their leadership and support around older adult falls prevention legislation and included other HSC priorities.

HSC Supports Allies in Requests to President-Elect Obama...
HSC showed its support for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and signed on to the CDC Coalition letter to President-elect Obama and his transition team. The letter asked the president-elect and his team to make funding for CDC a priority in 2009.

Additionally, HSC supported the Campaign for Public Health’s public health-focused letter to Congress and the incoming Obama administration. More than 120 organizations signed on in support of this letter, including national health organizations, health departments and universities.

Dr. Angela Mickalide Receives “2008 SOPHE Trophy”...
Dr. Angela Mickalide, HSC’s Director of Education and Outreach, was recognized by the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) for her dedication to public health through the Society with the “2008 SOPHE Trophy.” The award is granted annually to an individual who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to the organization. Mickalide received her award in October at the 59th Annual Meeting of the Society in San Diego.
