Throughout 2009, the Home Safety Council's life-saving home safety tips and information reached millions of families across the United States through featured segments and stories with top-rated national broadcast, print and online media outlets. In December, the Home Safety Council ended the year with a holiday safety segment that was featured on CNN Accent Health and aired in doctors' offices across the country.

The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) and HSC Partner to Educate Families about Home Fire Safety during Fire Safety Month in October...
In light of new research revealing only 37 percent of surveyed adults had taken any actions at home to prevent fires, HSC and the NFSA teamed-up to educate families about the benefits of home fire sprinklers. Media and community outreach throughout Fire Safety Month in October delivered valuable home fire safety tips and information to families across the country.

HSC Joins Public Health Organizations to Send a Letter to the President Urging Injury Prevention in Health Reform Bill...
HSC joined more than 40 other public health organizations to write a letter to the President in support of the Administration's inclusion of a National Prevention and Health Promotion Strategy, and a Prevention and Public Health Fund on his short list of health reform "must-haves."

Safety of Seniors Act Demonstrates Public Policy Success at American Public Health Association's Annual Conference...
At the American Public Health Association's 137th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, HSC presented the Safety of Seniors Act as a public health policy success for older adult falls prevention. The session explored the vital role of injury prevention in public health, using older adult falls prevention as a lens to examine the impact that injuries have on the U.S. at the state and federal levels. The session also included a discussion on policy and programmatic interventions to address this important and growing public health problem.

FY 2010 Omnibus Spending Bill Includes $2 Million in Funding for Falls Prevention...
The efforts of the Falls Free Coalition and specifically the Advocacy Work Group reached a major milestone in December when the FY 2010 omnibus spending bill was announced stating that $2 million within the total Unintentional Injury budget was for "elderly falls prevention research."  The additional funding represents an increase of $1 million for the program!

Patricia Adkins Reports Progress of the National Collaboration/Partnership-Building Work Group at the Safe and Healthy Housing Coalition Meeting...
The Safe and Healthy Housing Coalition reconvened for its second meeting on October 21. At the meeting, the National Collaboration/Partnership-Building Work Group, chaired by HSC's Patricia Adkins, reported its progress in creating coalition guidelines that will clarify membership provisions. Adkins also reported on the group's progress in developing a membership kit and generating a membership target list to increase coalition membership.

Jeff Norton of Viking Corporation Selected for the Home Safety Council's 2009 "President's Award"
HSC presented its 2009 President's Award to Jeff Norton, Director of Marketing for Viking Group in recognition of his support to provide side-by-side home fire sprinkler demonstrations in 11 locations across the United States on Safety Saturday.
