HSC Launches New, Interactive Web Site - homesafetycouncil.org...
HSC recently unveiled its new, interactive and consumer-friendly Web site. The site includes all of the information, tools and resources you have come to expect from HSC, but has been redesigned to follow a life stage approach. The navigation makes it easy to find safety tools and information to help keep people of all ages safe at home. Homesafetycouncil.org has also been updated to include interactive quizzes, online forums and a Share Your Story feature where caregivers and safety professionals alike can share their personal experiences and best practices with one another.

Home Safety Month Campaign Highlights...
At the end of June, the Home Safety Council concluded another successful Home Safety Month campaign reaching millions of families with injury prevention messages. Anchored by new research revealing that many families lack the basic information needed to prevent injuries at home, the Home Safety Council aimed to bridge the knowledge gap by driving parents and caregivers online to its new, consumer-friendly Web site for easy-to-understand safety tips.

HSC Introduces Safety Saturday Initiative with Generous Support from Lowe's...
We're partnering with our founding sponsor, Lowe's, to kick-off Fire Safety Month with a series of local educational events that will bring communities together to learn about fire safety. Safety Saturday is a free public event taking place at Lowe's stores across the country on Saturday, September 26. We're also extending the concept online to help families make every Saturday a Safety Saturday by providing a series of home safety project ideas they can accomplish together in a weekend.

Banner Poison Control Center and HSC Collaborate on Second Health Literacy Training Workshop for Poison Prevention Educators...
HSC's Dr. Angela Mickalide traveled to Tempe, Arizona to participate in the second of three workshops created to help poison control center educators better communicate safety messages to low literacy populations. The workshops train poison control center educators to implement HSC's highly illustrated and easy-to-read poison prevention materials to help the low literacy population in their communities.

New HSC Research Reveals a Home Safety Knowledge Gap among Caregivers...
The Home Safety Council recently surveyed parents on their home safety actions and perceptions and the results point to a gap between how parents feel and the actions they have taken to keep their loved ones safe at home. According to the new research, nearly all parents (99 percent) surveyed believe it is important to keep their family safe at home, yet the majority haven’t taken a comprehensive approach to protect against the leading causes of home injury.

HSC Adds Nationally Recognized Leaders to Its Board of Directors...
In June, HSC announced the appointment of Thomas F. Connaughton and R. David Paulison to its Board of Directors. Combined, Connaughton, Director of Life Safety and Security Services for Intertek Group Plc, and Chief Paulison, former Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), bring more than 50 years of emergency preparedness and life safety experience to the Home Safety Council's leadership team.

Ortho® and HSC Raise Awareness for the Health Hazards Associated with Mice...
With recent research revealing that more than half of families falsely believe mice are unpleasant but harmless creatures, HSC and Ortho are working together to educate families on the health hazards linked to mice and the importance of taking action to keep mice out of the home. This campaign will begin in September 2009 and allows HSC to draw the connections between a safe and healthy home.

3M® and HSC Team-up to Promote Do-It-Yourself Safety...
HSC and 3M are collaborating on an awareness campaign to educate consumers on the importance of Do-It-Yourself Safety. The partnership is in two phases: a research phase, to begin summer 2009, to understand more about consumer attitudes, knowledge and behavior of safety precautions necessary for DIY projects; and the consumer awareness campaign, launching in 2010 which will include online and traditional media outreach.

Toys 'R Us Children's Fund...
New parents have so much to concern themselves with when they learn they will be adding to their family. Safety for the baby's new home is a priority. To help parents and caregivers understand what they should be doing to prepare their home from a safety perspective, HSC is partnering with Toys ‘R Us/Babies ‘R Us on a baby and toddler safety campaign with online and traditional media elements. The program will launch in August 2009.

Senator Mikulski Sends Dear Colleague...
With the urging of HSC and the Falls Free Advocacy Work Group, Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) agreed to send a Dear Colleague requesting $10 million for older adult falls prevention. In the letter, Mikulski recognized the Falls Free Coalition Advocacy Work Group (FFCAWG), including HSC as a leading expert representing the aging community, public health professionals and safety experts.

Appropriations Testimony Submitted for FY 2010...
In support of Senator Barbara Mikulski's (D-MD) funding request, HSC submitted testimony to the Senate Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies to increase funding for CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. This request was made on behalf of the 30-member falls coalition as an indication of the growing support surrounding this issue.

Interview with Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX)...
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson's office contacted HSC to invite a representative to be the featured guest on the Congresswoman's weekly cable TV show on Tuesday, June 9th. Throughout June, the Congresswoman's office focused on safety topics and interviewing guests with tips that will help constituents learn what they can do to prevent injuries. The interview was set-up as a one-on-one conversation between the Congresswoman and Meri-K Appy.

National Home Safety Month Resolution...
Representative Deborah Halvorson (D-IL) introduced an HSC-drafted resolution supporting the goals and ideals of Home Safety Month. After distributing a Dear Colleague to members of the House, the resolution easily secured 113 cosponsors. With the help of HSC outreach, H. Res. 543 was introduced on the House floor on June 12, 2009.

International Fire Service Training Association Selects HSC President, Meri-K Appy, for Everett E. Hudiburg Award...
The International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) recognized Home Safety Council President, Meri-K Appy's more than 25 year commitment to fire and life safety education with its Everett E. Hudiburg Award. Meri-K received the award at the IFSTA Validation Conference in Washington, DC on July 23.

Home Safety Council's 2008 Safe Haven Campaign earned national recognition for its success in communicating critical home safety messages and training to the public and life safety professionals across the United States. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) presented HSC with the Silver Anvil Award for Reputation/Brand Management – Nonprofit Organizations at its 2009 ceremony in New York City.
