Home Safety Month Campaign Highlights…
Anchored by the launch of MySafeHome.org and the release of new room-specific research, Home Safety Month 2008 marks HSC's most successful and wide-reaching Home Safety Month campaign to date. During June, HSC reached millions of families across the country with injury prevention messages, encouraging them to visit MySafeHome.org and take a room-by-room approach to making their homes safer.

HSC Welcomed the Ten Kids Prepare America Winners to Washington, DC…
HSC was proud to host the ten Kids Prepare America contest grand prize winners as they gathered in Washington, DC to be recognized at HSC's Salute to Home Safety awards dinner in June. As part of the prize, each winner traveled with an adult family member and his or her teacher to tour the nation's capital.

The Great Safety Adventure® Delivers Safety Messages to Military Families at Fort Campbell …
The Great Safety Adventure traveled to Fort Campbell, Kentucky in June to participate in a day-long safety fair designed to address safety concerns among military families. HSC president Meri-K Appy joined with Army dignitaries and development partners from Actus Lend Lease, WinnResidential and Fort Campbell Family Housing to share important safety lessons with children and caregivers whose loved ones are on active duty overseas.

HSC Wraps-Up the Expert Network Webinar Series…
In May, HSC concluded the Expert Network Webinar Series made possible in part through a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Fire Prevention and Safety grant. HSC hosted ten Webinars featuring national safety experts. The Webinars were designed to introduce Expert Network members to cutting-edge research and proven home safety and preparedness teaching tools - without the expense of travel.

HSC Collaborates Low Literacy Workshop for Poison Prevention Educators…
HSC's Dr. Angela Mickalide traveled to Clearwater Beach, Florida with representatives from The Banner Poison Control Center (BPCC) to launch the first poison control center training workshop on the topic of communicating safety messages to a low literacy population. Made possible by a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant, HSC is proud to collaborate with BPCC on this unique outreach program to help poison control center educators and literacy professionals reach the underserved, low literacy population with critical safety messages.

New HSC Research Gauges Room-Specific Home Safety Actions…
Just in time for Home Safety Month in June, HSC debuted new research findings that reveal what actions, if any, U.S. adults have taken to prevent the leading causes of injury in each room of their home. Among the findings, the research revealed that U.S. adults rank the kitchen, bathroom and stairway/hallway as the most dangerous rooms of the home. Yet, nearly half of the respondents admitted that they had not taken a single action to make any of those rooms safer.

HSC and EMBARQ Partner to Help Families Plan for
Severe Weather

With recent HSC research reporting that only 30 percent of families have created and discussed an emergency communications plan, HSC and EMBARQ are once again working together to educate families about the importance of preparing for severe weather disasters.

Kids Prepare America Winners on Capitol Hill…
The ten grand prize winners of the Kids Prepare America contest had the opportunity to meet with Senators and Representatives from their home states to be recognized for their great achievements. In total, the group visited over 20 Congressional offices. During their visits, the student winners had photos taken with their Senator or Representative, received souvenirs and were given private tours of the Capitol and their Members' personal offices. Several students' visits were later profiled on their Members' Web sites.

Meri-K Appy Testifies in Front of the Senate HELP Committee…
Meri-K Appy represented HSC as one of four panelists in front of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee at the "Keeping America's Children Safe: Preventing Childhood Injury" hearing. Appy shared testimony about how HSC's research informs the development of its educational programs for children, the successful programs that have been implemented and the challenges associated with communicating injury prevention messages to families and caregivers.

Home Safety Month Celebrates Another Success…
With the end of June comes the end of another busy and successful Home Safety Month. HSC achieved successes on all fronts, beginning with visits to The Great Safety Adventure by public policy officials, including Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and Goodyear, Arizona Mayor James M. Cavanaugh. In addition, more than 20 Members of Congress posted Home Safety Month-related materials on their Web sites or in their constituent newsletters. Representative Nancy Boyda (D-2nd KS) also hosted a press conference emphasizing the importance of home safety and the role that Congress can play to raise awareness.

Individual and Corporate Contributions to Home Safety Recognized at the Salute to Home Safety Awards Dinner...
At this year's Salute to Home Safety awards dinner in June, HSC announced five winners for the 2008 Commendation Awards for Product Innovation. Product manufacturers from a variety of industries received the award in recognition of their innovative product developments that aim to improve consumer safety. Corporations, educators and individuals were also recognized at the Dinner for their consumer and employee home safety awareness programs and personal leadership in advancing the effort to reduce home-related injuries.
