Salute to Home Safety Awards Dinner
On June 5, 2008, the Home Safety Council will hold the Salute to Home Safety Awards Dinner to recognize the 10 Kids Prepare America Contest grand prize winners as well as companies and individuals who have made outstanding achievements in home safety awareness and safety innovation. Manufacturers, corporations, students, educators and individuals will all be acknowledged for their safety innovations, consumer and employee home safety awareness programs and personal leadership in advancing the effort to reduce home-related injuries.

HSC Featured in Three TODAY Show Segments
During the first quarter alone, the nation’s top-rated morning show called upon the Home Safety Council to provide expert opinion and advice for three morning show segments. HSC worked with NBC’s TODAY Show to produce three segments featuring Meri-K Appy as the safety expert educating viewers about the importance of fire escape planning, poison prevention and scald burn prevention.

Home Safety Council Prepares for Home Safety Month 2008
This June, the Home Safety Council will celebrate Home Safety Month once again and is offering a suite of new tools and resources to help you spread the word in your community. HSC will encourage the public to make a commitment to home safety by taking the simple actions needed to make their homes safer – one room at a time.

To kick-off Home Safety Month, HSC is excited to announce its new, interactive home injury prevention teaching tool – MySafeHome.org. The Web site invites visitors into a virtual home where state-of-the-art digital animation identifies major risk areas, room-by-room, indoors and out, and presents the key safety devices and preparedness plans that are important for every safe home.

The Home Safety Council also collaborated with Good Housekeeping on a special advertising section to deliver home safety messages to the publication’s 26 million readers during the month of June. The special section features key home safety advice as well as the latest home safety product innovations and is included in the June issue of Good Housekeeping. It will be distributed at Lowe's stores throughout Home Safety Month.

The Great Safety Adventure® Kicks-off Its 10th Anniversary Tour
In February, HSC kicked-off the 10th anniversary tour of The Great Safety Adventure® (GSA). Created by HSC and sponsored by Lowe’s, the award-winning field trip on wheels has been touring the country since 1999 and stopping at elementary schools and Lowe’s stores in local communities to bring valuable home safety lessons to life for more than one million parents and children.

HSC Supports the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Poison Help
Campaign Launch
As part of the Home Safety Council’s Poison Prevention activities in March, Director of Education and Outreach, Dr. Angela Mickalide participated in the launch event for HRSA’s new “Poison Help Campaign.” HRSA Administrator, Dr. Elizabeth Duke announced the new campaign at a kick-off event held in Washington, DC during national Poison Prevention Week. HRSA’s Poison Help Campaign features a new Web site with downloadable resources to educate the public on poison prevention.

HSC Participates as one of the U.S. Fire Administration’s Smoking & Home Fires Campaign Partners
Every year, almost 1,000 smokers and non-smokers are killed in home fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials. The Home Safety Council is working to reduce that toll by partnering with the U.S. Fire Administration on its Smoking & Home Fires Campaign. HSC’s Director of Education and Outreach, Dr. Angela Mickalide, participated in the Campaign kick-off event in January where partners throughout the country were given a toolkit of materials to help them implement the program in their local communities.

HSC’s Dr. Mickalide Awards Recipients of Safe Escape Grant Funding
HSC’s own Dr. Angela Mickalide was selected by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) to help judge the organization’s Safe Escape grant applications. More than 40 children’s-based hospitals applied to receive a $100,000 grant to establish a safety store, or augment a current one to include a focus on disaster preparedness and response for children with disabilities. Mickalide was also on-hand at the NACHRI Awards Luncheon in Miami to announce the six grant winners.

HSC Releases New Safe Haven Research
Most adults across America believe they have the knowledge needed to make their homes a safe haven where their loved ones are protected from injuries. Yet, the Home Safety Council’s latest Safe Haven survey investigated the nation’s use of safety products and practices and found that an alarming number of U.S. adults fail to appreciate the risk of home injury and lack the motivation and/or knowledge to reduce it.

HSC and H2otStop Work to Raise Awareness about
Hot Water Burns
The Home Safety Council and H2otStop, a new product from American Valve, partnered to educate families on the dangers of hot water burns. Anchored by new research and actionable scald burn prevention safety tips, the highly successful campaign reached millions of families across the country, resulting in more than 68 million media impressions.

President Bush Signs Safety of Seniors Act
As an active member of the Falls Free Coalition Advocacy Work Group, the Home Safety Council applauds passage of the Safety of Seniors (SOS) Act. The bill, signed into law by President Bush on April 23, comes at a critical time when each year, one in three Americans age 65 and older falls and about 30 percent of those who fall require medical treatment. The legislation will expand research and programs to help prevent elder falls – the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for Americans age 65 and older.

The Great Safety Adventure® Garners Visits from Public Policy Officials
Adding to the excitement of The Great Safety Adventure®’s 10th Anniversary, the 2008 touring year kicked-off to a successful start with visits from several public policy officials. Continued local community outreach was successful in drawing seven public policy officials to visit the exhibit at events held throughout the states of Texas and California.

HSC Announces Winner of the
Anne W. Phillips Award
The Home Safety Council awarded the second annual Dr. Anne W. Phillips Award for Leadership in Fire Safety Education to noted fire safety educator, Nancy Trench. In honor of Dr. Anne W. Phillips’ outstanding achievements in fire safety education, the award recognizes those who follow her example in advancing the field of the fire safety. Trench received the award during the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s (CFSI) National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington, DC on Thursday, April 3, 2008.
