Home Safety - Angela Mickalide, Ph.D., CHES

Angela Mickalide, Ph.D., CHES, joined the Home Safety Council in 2005 as the Director of Education and Outreach. Dr. Mickalide is responsible for leading the development, execution and evaluation of all Home Safety Council injury prevention outreach initiatives, educational campaigns and community volunteer programs.

For 15 years, Dr. Mickalide served as the Program Director of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign. In this capacity she ensured the scientific rigor of the Campaign's injury prevention programs addressing traffic injuries (occupant, pedestrian, bicyclist), fires and burns, drowning, falls, airway obstruction and poisoning.

An active member of the public health and injury prevention community, Dr. Mickalide has published more than 70 articles, book chapters and research reports, as well as delivered numerous keynote presentations. She also serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion Practice. Dr. Mickalide recently graduated as a Scholar in the Public Health Education Leadership Institute (PHELI) and serves as the Trustee for Publications and Communications for the Society for Public Health Education.

Throughout her career, Dr. Mickalide has received numerous awards including the Early Career Award from the American Public Health Association's Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section, a Health Service Commendation for exemplary performance as Staff Coordinator of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, and a Champion of SAFE KIDS Award. She also received the Sarah Mazelis Award for outstanding public health education practice from the American Public Health Association's Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section.

Dr. Mickalide graduated summa cum laude from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1979. She earned her PhD degree in 1985 at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, specializing in public health, psychology, and health education. Dr. Mickalide is also a certified health education specialist (CHES).
