Commendation Award for Product Innovation: 2008 Winners

The Home Safety Council's 2008 Commendation Award for Product Innovation winners include the following companies and their respective products:

Oliso, Inc. – Oliso Steam Irons with Auto-Lift System: With the Auto-lift system, the Oliso iron always remains in a safe, horizontal position to protect clothes and consumers from burns. When it's let go, the iron lifts up a safe distance off the fabric to minimize scorching. Horizontal, the iron's hot soleplate is not exposed. This provides greater stability, reducing the danger that the iron will tip over and burn someone if the ironing board is bumped.

Home Care by Moen – SecureMount Installation System: Grab bars in tubs and showers are important safety features for every home. The SecureMount Installation System makes it easier than ever before to install them properly. A patented flange design with six openings, including three elongated slots, allows for a secure installation at any angle – horizontally, vertically or even diagonally. Plus, the installation exceeds ADA requirements with a 500 pound weight pull capacity (ADA compliancy is 250 pounds).

Fellowes, Inc. – DS-1 Shredder with SafeSense Technology: Home office equipment can be tempting to children. Whether it's a child's hands or a dog's tail, SafeSense^TM Technology stops the shredder instantly when body parts get too close to the paper opening.

Halo Innovations, Inc. – SleepSackTM Swaddle: Designed by a parent who lost an infant to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), and now being used in hospital nurseries nationwide, the HALO^® SleepSack^TM wearable blanket replaces loose bedding in the crib that can cover your baby's face and interfere with breathing. Regular baby blankets in the crib can be dangerous. Osram Sylvania – Power Failure Light: The Osram Sylvania Power Failure Light is the first of its kind to offer bright LED illumination during power failures to prevent falls in the home. It is always charging while plugged in. When it senses a loss of power, the LED night light automatically comes on to light the way for up to three hours while still in the outlet. The Power Failure Light can also be used as an LED flashlight.
