Commendation Seal for Safety Innovation: 2005 Winners

The Home Safety Council's 2005 Commendation Seal for Product Innovation for Consumer Safety winners include the following companies and their respective products:

BrassCraft^® - Safety+PLUS^® device: The Safety+PLUS device is a unique fitting that reacts to a gas line rupture or massive leak between the device and an appliance by stopping the flow of all but a very small, predetermined amount of gas (called the "bypass flow"). The bypass flow is designed not to be hazardous and is intentionally used to reset the device automatically, but not until the rupture or catastrophic leak has been fixed.

Creative Specialties International – HomeCare by Moen: The patented line of bath safety products are consumer and therapist tested, ADA-compliant and combine safe, solid construction with an attractive, stylish design that looks less institutional than other products on the market today.

Electronic Control Systems, LLC – UltraGuard: The only UL listed, proactive carbon monoxide safety system in the world, the UltraGuard is a patented, unique CO monitoring and control system that upon detecting certain CO levels, sounds alarms and shuts off the furnace and hot water heater.

GarageTek – GarageTek Organization and Storage System: Every GarageTek storage and organization system helps consumers create neat, clean and safe garage spaces. In 2004, and after numerous anecdotal accounts of injuries occurring in garages, GarageTek made a corporate commitment to safety through its development of an annual Garage Safety Awareness Week.

Kidde – Model 1276E Smoke Alarm: The 1276E smoke alarm features a new front-load battery door, easing and promoting the home safety practice of regularly replacing smoke alarm batteries.

Larson Manufacturing – SecureElegance™: The new line of glass security storm doors feature a tough plastic interlayer that is fused between two panes of glass, and offers impact protection and greater insulation value. Larson is the first storm door company to utilize this technology in a line of consumer storm doors.

Levolor - Size-In-Store Cordless Blinds: The innovative cordless window blinds reduce potential strangulation and entanglement risks for children and pets.

MTD Products Inc. - No Mow in Reverse Safety Switch: MTD is the only manufacturer of riding mowers to voluntarily mandate a "no mow in reverse" safety feature on all of their riding mowers since the 1980's. The safety switch shuts off the mower blades if an operator fails to do so before shifting into reverse. Through MTD's efforts, this industry safety enhancement is now part of a new ANSI safety standard for riding mowers.

Springs Window Fashions LP – SWF goes beyond the standard requirements by including additional safety devices, warnings and literature with every custom product they manufacture and ship. Safety steps include compliance with all standard requirements for minimal lead content, inclusion and installation of tension devices, and multi-lingual wording of warning labels and warning hang tags.

Therma-Tru – Classic Craft Entry Door System: Addressing the need for residential housing constructed to withstand hurricane force winds, the Classic-Craft entry door system has hurricane force wind resistance far exceeding the requirements for residential homes nationwide.

The Scotts Company – Pull ‘N Spray II Applicator: The new applicator model uses siphoning system to dispense the content vs. pressure, reducing the risk of accidental spraying/consumer injuries.

Tower Manufacturing Corporation – ShockBuster Portable GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter): The ShockBuster provides portable protection against hazardous shock from damaged cords or exposure to water on tools, appliances and outdoor equipment.

Watts Water Technologies – Under Sink Guardian^® (USG): Designed to prevent water scalding injuries, USC blends hot and cold water to produce safe mixed water at point of use.
