HSC Applauds Representative Halvorson for Leadership in Home Safety Issues

Representative Deborah Halvorson (D-IL) introduced an HSC-drafted resolution supporting the goals and ideals of Home Safety Month. After distributing a Dear Colleague to members of the House, the resolution easily secured 113 cosponsors.

The resolution:

• Recognizes the contributions of home safety related nonprofits, including HSC for introducing www.MySafeHome.org to help adults identify the dangers present in and around the home, and for promoting the Hands on Home Safety Campaign;
• Encourages adults, parents, and caregivers to take greater actions to reduce unintentional injuries and educate themselves on the importance of home safety; and
• Encourages manufacturers to develop innovative safety products and features to help lessen the number of home injuries and accidents; and local and national government leaders to support funding for critical home safety education programs.

With the help of HSC outreach, H. Res. 543 was introduced on the House floor on June 12, 2009. Representative Halvorson read a one-minute statement at the introduction of the bill and asked for her fellow Representatives to seek full passage of the resolution.

On July 16, 2009 in a huge HSC victory, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H. Res. 543, officially declaring June as National Home Safety Month!
